I thought it might be helpful to create a resource page that you can come to rely on for all your Mac backup needs. I’ll only post links here to apps or software that I’ve used or think will provide value to you, the reader. I will be updating this list as I learn about new software that I think might be helpful, so make sure to check back often.
Online Backup
- Backblaze offers a fully automated and seamless backup process. Once you complete the initial setup and backup, Backblaze will run in the background and ensure that all new files are updated leaving you to enjoy using your computer without having to worry about backing up.
- Dropbox: Great if you don’t want to backup the entire contents of your hard drive. Dropbox excels at storing important documents and files in the cloud, but can also work very well as an automated backup system. When you sign up you get 2GB of free storage.
- Mozy is available for home and business use. Files are not only backed up but also encrypted which means they are safe and secure.
- Carbonite offers a free 15 day trial. If you choose not to keep the service your files and data will be deleted. The backup process is automated.
Buying External Hard Drives
- MacMall: A Mac specific store that has pretty much anything you’d ever want regarding Macs. Whether you’re looking to upgrade memory, buy a gift, or looking to buy an external hard drive so you can backup your data (yes, do that!), MacMall is highly recommended.
Disk Management
- Carbon Copy Cloner: Being prepared is essential when backing up your Mac, and one amazing app that helps you do just that is Carbon Copy Cloner. Carbon Copy Cloner helps you do all kinds of amazing things with your data, such as creating a bootable volume ready to go in a moment’s notice, or scheduling backups regularly, and even emailing you once your backups are complete! These are just three amazing features of Carbon Copy Cloner and I would highlight suggest you add to your list of applications if you’re serious about backing up your Mac.
- SuperDuper! helps you create a bootable backup and makes the process quick and easy. One of the thigns I like about SuperDuper! is that its interface is nice and clear. If you’re unfamiliar with backing up, it will help you through every part of the process. Creating a bootable backup is important, because if your Mac crashes, you’ll be able to boot (load) your computer in a working state, with all of your data intact. SuperDuper! is built by Mac users, and even better, they have a free trial so you can try it out!
